Indiana, meaning the "Land of the Indians," is a state in the Great Lakes region of the Midwestern United States. Residents of Indiana are called Hoosiers. Indiana is 15th in population at nearly 6.3 million,[1] and 38th in size,[2] making it 17th in population density.[3] About half (49.48%) of Indiana's population lives in the metropolitan areas of Indianapolis, Gary-Hammond (suburban Chicago), Fort Wayne, or Evansville[citation needed].
